THE KISSING POST
I am in favor of preserving the French habit of kissing ladies’ hands–after all, one must start somewhere. –Sacha Guitry, French actor, playwright and film maker

The title of today’s post is THE KISSING POST– not to be confused with THE HITCHING POST, which would be a post about the ceremony of getting hitched (after kissingΒ went to the hand-kisser’s head). Alternatively,Β THE HITCHING POSTΒ could beΒ a post about a post to which you tetherΒ your horse….as opposed toΒ your spouse (pardonΒ my horse play).
Be that as it may, it may interest you to know that anthropologists believe kissing is a learned behavior. But theyΒ believe above allΒ in science, soΒ whatΒ competence could anthropologists possiblyΒ haveΒ in the field ofΒ kissing….with theΒ likely exception ofΒ Parisian anthropologists, who are said toΒ haveΒ FrenchΒ kissing down toΒ an art….in the interest ofΒ science? C’est une bonne planque!*
Knowing thatΒ manyΒ of my readersΒ areΒ serious about science, you would no doubtΒ like to knowΒ where I came up withΒ what “it may interest you to know” —Β so, just so you know:

As for the romantic barbarians among you, far be it from me to kiss you off. Kiss on!

Personally? I detest the European air kissing. If youβre coming in, go full throttle… donβt swish my cheeks with a drive by.

Thank you, rivergirl, for pointing out the “air” of European’s ways (when stuck for a reply that’s fun, my last resort is a pun).

The Kissing Post will, alas, be quickly forgotten unless you make it a Facebook post, Instagram post, Reddit post etc.

Interesting. The lips are intensely sensitive, so I’m not surprised that kissing evolved as something between lovers. π And thanks for the great songs. My toes were tapping. π

I don’t know if it played a role in Darwin’s theory of evolution, Diana, but if kissing was missing, he certainly left out one of the best parts.

I always thought kissing was instinctive. I never saw my parents kiss, but I certainly knew what to do when the time came!

Though you never saw your parents kiss, did you ever see what this kid saw? π

Sorry about the non-working link, Elizabeth (maybe it wants to go on the dole and is trying to get unemployment benefits). In any case, the song is I SAW MOMMY KISSING SANTA CLAUS, sung by Jimmy Boyd. If you’ve never heard the song before, you can Google it and find many clips to choose from.

You’re right — her voice may not have been what it was when she was younger, but she never lost her feel for a song. A true jazz artist.
