SINGING IN THE OUT AND INDOORS
A Book of Verses underneath the Bough
A Jug of Wine, a Loaf of Bread–and Thou
Beside me singing in the Wilderness
Oh, Wilderness were Paradise enow*!
–from Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam (1859 English translation by Edward Fitzgerald)
* an archaic word for enough

Where do you sing? I hear that now, unlike Omar, the shower is where one tunes one’s tonsils in secluded surroundings without disturbing objecting wildlife….but perhaps you’re the outdoors type, like this guy:
Or maybe you’re a bathtub baritone or a croaking-while-you’re-soaking soprano — but of course, you wouldn’t want to warble in an empty tub, so it helps if….
Now you’re set to get wet and get to….

Because Iβm a kind person, the only place I sing is in my car. With the windows rolled up.

I’m sure hubby is kind too and doesn’t cover his ears (at least, when he’s doing the driving). π

I sing in the car π Iβve also been known to accompany my car singing by air-playing the drums, a guitar AND the piano. Sometimes simultaneously π€

Gene Kelly’s “Singin’ in the Rain” is one of my all-time favorite songs π I used to sing a lot in my youth. Not anymore π¦

“Singing in the Rain” is also one of the all-time best musicals. I’ve watched it probably half-a-dozen times over the years.

I sing in the car. Unfortunately for my wife, I do not restrict my singing to when I am alone in the car. π

I must confess to bursting out in song on occasion in the car. My wife looks at me like I’ve lost my marbles, but just between you and me, she simply has no ear for talent. π

I used to sing all the time, where ever I was, indoors or out. Then my voice broke! π€£

That might seem a bit odd to any reader who assumed you’re female, but even if you were, it wouldn’t be unheard of. My wife almost broke my eardrums during more than one ‘heated exchange’! π

I cannot carry a tune in a wet paper bag. Neither can my partner. We sing anywhere, anytime. We think we sound pretty good.

I can clear a room just by showing up — one look at my face, and people run for the hills!

I am fortunate enough to sing every Sunday in church. I love to sing even though I have awful pitch and am nowhere between alto and soprano. I am definitely not in the choir, but I do like the way my voice anonymously(except to those in the same pew!) joins others.

M and I both sing in the car. We tend to drown out the music (and each other) in our enthusiasm, but we donβt care.

As long as the car doesn’t stop, and refuses to move until you guys stop singing, I see no reason why you SHOULD care! π

That song is a scene from the early ‘talkie’ film SHOW OF SHOWS (movies had just transitioned from silent to sound over the past year or two), so the staging of the song was indeed “awesome” considering that sound pictures were still in the primitive stage. BTW, the first clip is from the film SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN, which (in case you’ve never seen it) is a spoof of that transition, and is regarded by some critics as one of the best movie musicals of all time.

the early talkie was amazingly crisp & the singer looked so contemporary. am enchanted when I catch clips of everyday life from long ago that have been enhanced with color & sound π

You may be surprised to learn that the picture was NOT enhanced with color. “Most of it was originally filmed in two-strip technicolor” according to film critic Leonard Maltin, who calls “Singin’ in the Bathtub” one of the highlights of the movie.

It’s funny how many people talk about NOT being able to sing… and I’m one of them. I think we all would like to be really good singers, but even if we’re not, it doesn’t seem to matter. There’s something so satisfying using the human voice that way, isn’t there?
